BMR vs TDEE - What's the Difference and Why It Matters
BMR and TDEE are two of the most commonly used terms in calorie planning, and they are often mentioned together - but they measure two genuinely different things. Mixing them up is one of the most common reasons people end up eating far too little (or too much) when trying to hit a specific calorie target.
What Is BMR?
BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate - the number of calories your body burns at complete rest, just to maintain basic life-sustaining functions like breathing, circulation, and cell repair. It does not include any calories burned through movement, exercise, or daily activity of any kind.
BMR is typically estimated using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, one of the most widely used and well-validated formulas for this purpose:
Men: BMR = (10 x weight in kg) + (6.25 x height in cm) - (5 x age) + 5
Women: BMR = (10 x weight in kg) + (6.25 x height in cm) - (5 x age) - 161
What Is TDEE?
TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure - your BMR multiplied by an activity factor that accounts for how much you move throughout the day, including both structured exercise and everyday activity. TDEE represents the actual number of calories you burn in a typical day, and it is the figure most relevant when deciding how much to eat.

TDEE is the number that reflects your actual daily calorie burn, and it is the appropriate baseline for setting a maintenance, weight-loss, or weight-gain target.
Worked Example
Take someone with a BMR of 1,500 calories who exercises lightly a few times a week (activity multiplier 1.375):
TDEE = 1,500 x 1.375 = 2,063 calories
This 2,063 figure - not the 1,500 BMR figure - is this person's actual maintenance calorie level. From there, a calorie deficit (for weight loss) or surplus (for weight gain) would be calculated as a percentage adjustment to the TDEE number, not the BMR number.
How to Use Both Numbers Correctly
- Use BMR to understand your baseline resting energy needs, or as an input into calculating TDEE.
- Use TDEE as your actual reference point for daily calorie intake - whether you are maintaining, cutting, or building.
- Never eat at your BMR number unless you are literally at complete rest all day, since doing so ignores your real activity level and can result in an unintentionally aggressive deficit.
A Note on Accuracy
Both BMR and TDEE formulas are estimates based on population averages - individual metabolism can vary due to factors like muscle mass, hormonal conditions, and genetics. These calculations provide a solid, evidence-based starting point, but tracking your actual weight trend over a few weeks and adjusting your intake accordingly will always be more accurate than any formula alone.
